Bay Area Women Against Rape is a private non- profit organization incorporated in 1971. Following the rape of a Berkeley High School student, the young women's mother and a group of friends, outraged at the treatment the survivor had received, founded BAWAR for the purpose of accomplishing two basic goals, (1) establish a place where rape and incest survivors could receive quality counseling and advocacy and (2) provide community education regarding sexual assault issues. BAWAR's goal has always been to empower, support, intervene on behalf of , and advocate for, sexual assault survivors. BAWAR also strives to provide education.
