April 2009 – Present Facilitator and Coach to Philanthropy (Independent consultant) Designs and facilitates learning and problem-solving opportunities within and between organizations. Coaches leaders to achieve balance, improved outcomes and desired results. Conducts organizational and market assessments to improve operations and reach organizational outcomes.
January 2006 – April 2009 Manager of Programs & Action Learning – Grantmakers for Effective Organizations Led GEO’s programs and member services in leadership development and organizational learning; managed GEO communications, co-led strategic planning, budgeting and work planning. Delivered high quality action/peer learning opportunities; led workshops on effective grantmaking practices.
February 2002 - December 2005 Independent Consultant Consulted with nonprofits and foundations on organizational effectiveness and Internet communications. Designed and facilitated strategic planning processes and retreats for boards, staff and supporters. Conducted environmental scans to identify and assess relevant trends, target audience needs and interests, funding, and lessons learned. Designed and delivered curriculum on a variety of organizational effectiveness and service delivery issues. Clients included Advocacy Institute, Benton Foundation, Community Technology Centers Network, NPower, Rebuilding Together-Montgomery County, Resolve, Spitfire Strategies.
May 2001 - February 2002 Program Director, Benton Foundation Managed program to research, evaluate and promote communications projects that serve or are operated by nonprofit organizations. Through print and electronic reports, peer learning networks and speaking engagements, shared lessons learned in strategic communications to nonprofits, grantmakers, media and policy makers. Wrote grant proposals and funder reports. Managed team of four, plus various writing and consulting contractors.
March 1996 - May 2001 Senior Associate, Benton Foundation Designed and developed renowned capacity building Web resource (Best Practices Toolkit) that educated nonprofit managers in use of the Internet for social change work. This positioning led to Benton’s selection by AOL Foundation for the development and management of a similar resource at Helping.org - predecessor to Network for Good. Managed research and writing projects including an environmental scan of technology capacity building efforts in the U.S. and a study of online development and human rights activities for a journalistic project. Established a national grant-making program to increase access to and training in the use of communications technology by the arts community. Evaluated grant proposals; hired and trained project director.
May 1989 - March 1996 Associate Director, Institute for Global Communications (PeaceNet/EcoNet/ConflictNet/LaborNet/WomensNet) Participated in annual planning, budgeting, and review process as a member of the management team. Managed opening and initial operations of regional office in Washington, DC, 1994-1996. Managed customer service department that processed approximately 100 requests daily via email and telephone; developed online resources for same. Developed and managed nationwide training program, working with technical assistance providers, independent contractors, and volunteers; developed curriculum, trained trainers and end-users. Trained school teachers in Beijing, China (August 1991) in use of email and collaborative educational technology projects. Designed and maintained the first Web-based directory of progressive organizations and advocacy news. Consulted with nonprofit organizations on improving their use of the Internet, with a particular focus on electronic publishing; developed curricula and documentation for same. Sept. 1986 - May 1989 Freelance AdministrativeSystems Analyst, San Francisco, CA Consulted with banking, architecture, law and nonprofit clients on the integration of computer technology into public affairs communications, financial reporting, project and client tracking.
April 1983 - July 1986 Project Coordinator. US.-Soviet Space Bridges Project Production coordinator on two interactive video simulcasts / public television productions, “Remembering War” (1985), “Children and Film” (1983). University of California San Diego and the Roosevelt Center for American Policy Studies.
