Biography
From leadership positions in both nonprofits and foundations, as well as running a consulting practice, Jillaine has over two decades' experience in strategy design, program development and management as well as training, facilitation and coaching.
  • As associate director of the Institute for Global Communications (1989-1996) she pioneered the use of Internet for social change organizations.
  • As program director at the Benton Foundation, she developed and led their program in "Strategic Communications in the Digital Age" (1996-2002).
  • As an organizational development consultant and coach (2002-2005), she helped nonprofit organizations design and develop communications strategies and assess and build the organizational readiness to implement their initiatives.
  • As manager of action learning at Grantmakers for Effective Organizations as Manager of Programs, she designed and led their program to help teams of grantmakers improve the effectiveness of their grantmaking. (2006-2009)
Jillaine has a certificate from Georgetown University in Organization Development (May 2003) and she completed the Coaches Training Institute (May 2005). She has served on several nonprofit boards, including Green Media Toolshed, the Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network, and Institute for Global Communications, and she is board chair of iEARN-US: the International Education And Resource Network. Consulting Experience

Assessing Organizational Capacity
  • Conducted focus groups and interviews to help a membership association rethink its dues structure and options for earned revenue.
  • Designed, delivered and analyzed data from an online survey of a technical assistance advocacy organization to refine their target audience; analyzed internal operations, culture and the resources to support their plan.
  • Worked with the executive director and staff of a small but very facile children's advocacy organization to identify current strengths and challenges. Designed and facilitated a one-day strategic planning retreat and process for helping this organization set priorities.
  • Interviewed environment and technology experts to inform the strategic planning efforts of a conservation grantmaking program.

Peer Learning, Strategic Planning & Facilitation 

  • Designed, facilitated and supported several peer groups of grantmakers seeking to improve their ability to support leadership development, capacity building and general overall effectiveness among their grantees.
  • Facilitated a 2-day staff retreat for a nonprofit education organization to transform a board-created strategic plan into an staff-driven operational plan.
  • Designed and facilitated board retreats to help regional social service organization clarify its vision and mission and identify program priorities.
  • Facilitated a strategic planning process, including preparatory team meetings leading up a one-and-a-half day retreat of staff and board members for a small technology assistance organization.
  • Co-facilitated the an emerging network of foundations through its initial strategic planning leading up to their first "summit."

Next Level Communications

  • Facilitated a communications planning process for a leadership development organization, resulting in clarified priorities for reaching their target audience and an action plan for repurposing their intellectual assets for online dissemination.
  • Facilitated a communications planning process for a technology assistance organization, resulting in both an action plan for new leadership at the organization, and a revised web site.
  • Designed an online assessment tool to help organizations through a self-guided communications planning process.
  • Facilitated a communications planning process with a national conflict resolution organization, resulting in a set of staff-driven priorities to increase the organization's visibility.
Environmental Scans / Writing 

  • Conducted research and interviews and co-authored the resulting Power to the Edges, a report about current trends and opportunities in online civic engagement.
  • Conducted a scan of conflict resolution services and client perspectives to clarify marketing priorities for a conflict resolution organization.
  • Conducted a literature review and documented the experiences of technology-related grantmakers for a set of recommendations to the philanthropic sector in a report for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation from Summit Collaborative.

Curriculum & Workshop Design

  • Designed or co-designed and delivered a series of workshops for grantmakers on such topics as "Learning for Results," "Capacity Building-- It's not Just a Grant" and "Making General Operating Support Work for Everyone."
  • Designed learning objectives for CTCNet's Leadership Development Institute on such topics as "Management vs. Leadership," "Innovative Fundraising," "Staff Development," and "Community Collaborations."
  • Designed curriculum for Spitfire Strategies' Communications Leadership Institute, for a workshop on interactive communications and online community building.
  • Convened and facilitated both small and large learning communities -- face-to-face and online gatherings of individuals from diverse organizations with similar needs, experience or interests.
  • Designed curriculum and led workshops to introduce the benefits of the Internet to peace and environmental activists and organizations.
